John's' grandfather emigrated from Scotland with his parents in 1775 and enlisted in the Revolution at just 14 years of age. John's' father was an Associate Reformed United Presbyterian pastor in New York. Our John, born in 1815, graduated Union College in 1838, and then from Princeton in 1844.
